Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Swiss Stadium Cities Are Banking on Football Tourism

When the Nati – the nickname Swiss fans give their men’s national team – reached the World Cup quarter-final this July, their first run that deep since 1954, the sporting story was only half of it. Behind every long cup run there’s an economy. Switzerland has been building one for decades: modern grounds, serious infrastructure money, and a hospitality trade that knows what to do when 30,000 people show up on a Saturday.

The receipts tell the story. Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 in the round of 32, knocked out Colombia on penalties in the round of 16, and bowed out 3-1 after extra time to Argentina in Kansas City. A year earlier, the country had hosted the entire UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, with more than 34,000 fans packing Basel for the final. Four of that summer’s grounds are open for business this autumn.

Basel: the Joggeli as economic engine

Start with the heavyweight. St. Jakob-Park holds 38,512 for league games – the biggest ground in Switzerland – and locals call it the “Joggeli,” the diminutive of Jakob in the Basel dialect. It opened in 2001 to a design by Herzog & de Meuron, the Basel star architects. The old stadium on the same site hosted the 1954 World Cup. The new one has worked harder than almost any ground in Europe since: EURO 2008’s opening match and a semi-final, the 2016 Europa League final between Sevilla and Liverpool, and the Women’s EURO 2025 final, where England drew 1-1 with Spain after extra time and won 3-1 on penalties.

That resume is what stadium investment is supposed to buy: marquee events, full hotels, and a reason for international visitors to come back. The ground has its own train station – Swiss match-day planning at its most practical – and sits where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, so a game day folds easily into a long weekend of museums, the Old Town and the Rhine waterfront. Cross-border culture seasons are booming too – see our report on October’s German culture boom in New York.

Sion and Bern: heritage grounds, steady income

In the Rhone Valley, the Stade de Tourbillon has been FC Sion’s home since 1968. At around 14,300 seats it’s the smallest and most charming ground on this list, with the ruins of Tourbillon Castle looking down on the stands from the hill above. It hosted Women’s EURO 2025 group matches, and the Valais does the rest of the commercial work: vineyards, Alpine resorts like Verbier and Crans-Montana, and the thermal baths of Leukerbad.

Bern sells history itself. BSC Young Boys play in the Stadion Wankdorf, a 32,000-seat ground opened in 2005 on one of football’s most famous addresses. The old Wankdorf hosted the 1954 World Cup final – Germany’s 3-2 comeback win over the mighty Hungarians on July 4, 1954, still known everywhere as the Miracle of Bern. Rebuilt on the site and reopened in 2005, it was called Stade de Suisse for fifteen years before taking its traditional name back in 2020. It was a venue for EURO 2008 and the Women’s EURO 2025, and Young Boys have turned it into one of Europe’s loudest home grounds. Bern’s UNESCO-listed Old Town handles the tourism between matches.

Geneva: the international address

Opened in 2003, the Stade de Geneve is home to Servette FC and holds almost 30,000. It feels like its city: international, multilingual, built for big nights. During the Women’s EURO 2025 it hosted the quarter-final between Norway and Italy and the semi-final where England beat Italy 2-1 after extra time. Beyond football, the ground regularly stages rugby matches, concerts and large cultural events. Lake Geneva, the Jet d’Eau and the historic Old Town round out the visit.

Why autumn is the moment

The Nati’s deepest World Cup run in 72 years put Swiss football on screens worldwide. Autumn fixture lists are out, the mountain air is cooling, and the train stations sit right outside the gates. If you’re pricing a European sports trip this fall, Switzerland is undervalued.
